Meet Crystal Carrero
Clean Beauty by Crystal blends modern clean-beauty principles with years of real-world experience
I began my career as a technical hairstylist and expanded into makeup artistry, giving me a well-rounded understanding of how hair, skin, and overall wellness connect. With over 19 years of hands-on experience working with diverse hair textures and skin types, Iβve developed my own signature aesthetic built around healthy, low-maintenance color, wash-and-go precision cuts that work with your natural texture, and effortless styling β all designed to keep your hair balanced and healthy.
For more than a decade, Iβve been deeply passionate about natural beauty, nutrition, and stress management. My curiosity about ingredients and the science of self-care inspired me to explore holistic methods and integrate them into both my personal life and professional practice. What Iβve discovered is that when these natural products are paired with professional styling processes and techniques, they often outperform commercial alternativesβdelivering noticeable results and long-lasting wellness benefits for both hair and skin. Through years of hands-on testing, research, and collaboration with brand manufacturers and holistic professionals, Iβve learned that natural formulas require a more open mindful approachβone rooted in intention, consistency, and an understanding of their organic balance of oils, waters, and botanicals.
My mission is to help people of all ages feel genuinely cared forβin a supportive, nonjudgmental environment that encourages confidence, mindfulness, and long-term well-being. I believe holistic beauty is more than a routineβitβs a lifestyle that helps you reconnect with yourself, your health, and your natural rhythm.
NATIVE NEW YORKER
Born and raised in Park Slope, Brooklyn, I grew up in a vibrant Hispanic household where life was full of love, creativity, and challenges. Health wasnβt always on our sideβI was often sick, and our family had limited access to clean food or holistic care. Even as a bubbly, curious young girl, I didnβt always feel well on the inside. Early on, I made a quiet promise to myself: to find a way to feel goodβphysically, mentally, and emotionallyβevery single day. That drive became the foundation of my lifelong search for wellness, purpose, and balance.
YOGA, THE START OF MY HEALTH JOURNEY
At fifteen, a move from Brooklyn to Manhattan changed everything. Our new building offered free yoga classesβand after just a few months, I felt transformed. Yoga eased my anxiety, strengthened my body, and opened a new awareness of the mind-body connection. By sixteen, I had committed to being a lifelong yogi and dove into the study of wellness philosophies, from Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine to pilates and massage therapy methods. I realized early on that all of these practices shared one truth: the body and mind are deeply connected. Simple and intentional habits can help the body heal itself.
MY CAREER INSPIRATION TO BE A HAIR AND MAKEUP ARTIST
In my late teens, I worked at El Flamingo, a small off-Broadway theater and nightclub that introduced me to the creative world of Diane and Randy Weiner, future directors of shows like Hair and Sleep No More. Watching their artistry unfold dailyβthrough costume, story, and transformationβignited my passion for the visual arts. Assisting with hair and makeup backstage, I discovered my calling: to bring stories and personalities to life through beauty.
Bumble & Bumble Salon; The Foundation Years
In 2005, I joined Bumble and Bumble, one of New York Cityβs most influential hair and fashion trend salons. As an apprentice at their flagship location, I trained under some of the worldβs top stylists, mastering technical haircutting, razor techniques, and editorial hair styling. Bumble, founded in 1977 by Michael Gordon, was revolutionary in its approachβtransforming the precision of Vidal Sassoonβs cuts into something more modern, textured, and undone. I learned not only how to cut hair but how to see itβto visualize texture, shape, and movement unique to each person. After years of dedicated learning, I joined the Bumble Fashion Week Team, working backstage at runway shows for Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Oscar de la Renta, and more. These experiences pushed me to blend art, history, and intuition into everything I did. Later, as an educator at Bumble University, I taught haircutting and styling to other stylists around the world. My years at Bumble taught me precision, creativity, and superb customer service skills. I practiced how to listen, collaborate and connect with my clients in an honest, lasting wayβmany of whom still sit in my chair today.
I BECOME A MOM
In 2010, I became a motherβa new chapter that transformed my perspective on health, balance, and self-care. It deepened my understanding of beauty as more than aestheticsβitβs energy, nourishment, and love.THE RAW FOOD LIFESTYLE
My deeper journey into holistic living began when I discovered Natalia Roseβs Raw Food Method. At the time, my son and I both faced autoimmune challenges, including eczema, allergies, and alopecia areata. Through Nataliaβs teachings, I learned all about the power of food in its most natural stateβand how deeply it can heal. After committing to the method for a year, I lost over 50 pounds, restored my energy, and saw dramatic improvements in my skin and immune health. The philosophy extended beyond dietβit became a lifestyle. It taught me that wellness is built on small, daily acts of care and awareness. Over the next decade, I transformed every part of my lifeβswitching to clean products, natural supplements, eco-friendly tools, and mindfulness rituals that aligned with this philosophy. These choices changed not only my health but the way I viewed my career and my clientsβ well-being.
Creative Growth & Going Independent
After 11 years with Bumble, I knew it was time to evolve. I trained at the Make Up For Ever Academy in Soho to strengthen my makeup artistry skills and began freelancing as a hairstylist and makeup artist for top talent agencies and productions across NYC. My creative eye and years of hands-on experience allowed me to quickly book work with major artists, stylists, and photographers. But as I built my freelance career, I noticed a gap in the industryβthere were no salon spaces that fully embraced natural clean beauty. I wanted to work in an environment that prioritized health, creativity, and calmβbut it didnβt exist. So, I decided to build it. I began with a test concept inside a co-working space in the Nomad district of Manhattan: a private, eco-conscious beauty studio designed for personalized, mindful care.
CLEAN BY CRYSTAL IS BORN
After years of planning and testing, Clean by Crystal officially openedβa private clean beauty salon and curated online store, dedicated to modern health and personalized style. It brought together everything I loved: artistry, research, teaching, and care. I used trusted resources like the EWG Skin Deep Database to ensure every product I carried was clean, sustainable, and effective. Clean by Crystal instantly became a space where clients could relax, learn, and feel cared for in a holistic, judgment-free environment.
